Plasticulture farming is a conservation practice that incorporates, in our case, plastic ground covers in place of mulches or other ground covers. This means we can use fewer pesticides and herbicides on our produce because the plastic keeps weeds from growing near the plants and keeps bugs off of the leaves. Additionally, using plastic helps hold in-ground moisture, which means we have to use less fuel and electricity to pump water and irrigate our plants. Plasticulture farming allows us to consume fewer resources while producing healthier plants for you and the environment.

Why Shop at Southern Maryland Farms?

When you choose to buy locally, you're making a powerful statement of supporting our local economy and small business owners. Each dollar spent circulates within the community, reinforcing its economic vitality and ensuring the survival and growth of family-owned farms that have, in many instances, been cultivated for generations. And with reduced transportation distances, the carbon footprint of our food is greatly reduced. Instead of our produce traversing continents, it journeys mere miles. This not only means fewer emissions but also fresher, superior quality food.

Speaking of quality, many of these small-scale farmers have an intrinsic connection to their land. They frequently employ practices that are eco-friendly, ensuring the conservation and enhancement of the region's biodiversity. Their commitments often extend beyond farming, as they strive to positively impact the Chesapeake Bay watershed and local ecosystems, making choices that favor long-term sustainability over short-term gains.

The passion of local farmers is palpable. They often view farming not just as a business, but as a calling. This translates to the meticulous care of their products and, in many cases, a genuine concern for the welfare of their animals. Moreover, numerous farms in the region champion healthy, organic options, allowing consumers to make better dietary choices.

Opting for local farms expands your horizon of healthy and organic options, presenting opportunities to enrich your diet with wholesome and diverse foods. Engage directly with the diligent farmers, gaining insights into their sustainable practices, and see firsthand where your food originates. At many farms you can even pick your own produce and relish the exceptional beauty Southern Maryland farms have to offer. The experience is further enriched with opportunities to join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Embrace the multifaceted benefits of shopping locally, and make a meaningful difference in your community, environment, and personal well-being.
