Obituary Preview: Wesley Moore, 94, was born on February 27, 1930, in Cairo, NC. Wesley departed this life on April 14, 2024, at the Veterans Affair Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut. Wesley was the sixth of ten children born to the late James Henry and Lucille Daye Moore of Burlington, NC.

Wesley joined the United States Armed forces in 1951 where he proudly served his country. Wesley did his basic training in Kentucky and was later deployed to Germany for the Korean War. Wesley finished his term in California where he was honorably discharged from serving his country.

Wesley was a longtime resident and business owner in Bridgeport, CT. Wesley was the proud owner of Superior Cleaners on Stratford Avenue in Bridgeport for 35 years. Wesley spoke about a time in Bridgeport when Black businesses where thriving and Stratford Avenue was considered the Black Wall Street of Bridgeport, CT in the mid to late 1900’s. Wesley was one of 9 Black business owners to start the renown Bridgeport Metropolitan Association for Black Business owners where he served as treasurer for 15 years. The Club was instrumental in helping the poor to middle class family fix up their homes, businesses, and their community.

Wesley had a love for God, family, church, and his community. Wesley was a man of service and he understood how important it was to help others. Wesley was a proud member of the Summerfield United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee and Usher for many years. Uncle Wesley was always the first one to send his family reunion paperwork in for our Daye Family Reunions. We could always count on Wesley to be there and help in any way he could. Wesley also loved his Daye and his Moore Family. Wesley also loved fellowshipping with the seniors at the Stratford Baldwin Center.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 10:00 AM, Summerfield United Methodist Church, 110 Clermont Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. Family will receive guests from 9:00 AM until time of service at the church. Interment will take place at State Veterans Cemetery, 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT.

Obituary Preview: King Richard Stanley Davis Jr. was born on November 28,1993 at Bridgeport Hospital. He was the son of Latorchia Diaz and Richard Davis, Sr. On March 30, 2024, Richard transitioned from this earthly life.

As a child, Richard was educated in both the Bridgeport and Stamford public school systems. He also attended Calvary Temple Christian Center in Bridgeport, CT under the leadership of Bishop John R. Thompson. Later in life, Richard chose a path of his own and studied the Islamic faith. As a young man, he attended The Cardinal Sheehan Center’s afterschool and summer programs. Then, as an adult, he gave back to the community by returning to The Sheehan Center to coach basketball. For several years, Richard was employed by both Dave & Busters, and a beautiful country club in Westport, CT. As he grew up and matured in life, Richard developed a love and passion for sports. In basketball, he was a starting point guard. In baseball, he played pitcher and center fieldman. Richard also played football, and took up boxing for a while. No matter the sport, Richard’s talent set him apart from the rest. He carried the responsibilities and principles of his athleticism with him and continued to display them in his personal life.

In basketball, Richard was a starting point guard. A point guard leads the team, organizes the team on the court, and controls the flow of the game. Richard loved his personal team – his family, friends, and all who entered his life. He demonstrated a higher level of loyalty to those he felt he could trust the most. With that loyalty, he proved to be a good friend who was strong-willed, fearless, and courageous. Those closest to Richard knew him as “Pooh Bear”, a nickname given to him by his oldest aunt Tisa because of his cute, chubby Winnie The Pooh Bear features. If Pooh Bear wasn't out two-stepping it with his cousin Nickayla, he was enjoying family gatherings with lots of food, fun, and games. Pooh Bear was also very competitive and did not like to play fair. Laughter was a love language for him, as he frequently kept his family cracking up. Visiting his aunts Toya and Tisa was another one of Pooh Bear’s favorite things to do. He had a special name for his aunt Toya and would often run up in her house yelling the name he gave her, “GOAT!” Pooh Bear cherished the time he spent with his family in Bridgeport and Stamford, CT. He especially loved traveling with his grandmother, Annette Davis, along with a host of cousins, aunts, and uncles – his team. He kept them close and kept them together, just as a good point guard should.

In baseball, Richard played pitcher and center fieldman. Both positions are responsible for managing the movement of the ball. Richard was very close to his siblings. He loved them dearly. Like a good pitcher, he released his grasp on his siblings when necessary, but kept a close eye on their movements through life. Richard also had a deep, enduring love for his girlfriend, Joshelle Barnett. He had a special bond with her mother, Shelly Ollivierre, and her sister Ashyia Barnett as well. A center fieldman is primarily responsible for catching fly balls. Richard always made sure that he was ready to catch and protect his loved ones. He was mostly non-confrontational unless he needed to stand firm on his defense. Even then, he defended with a humble spirit. Richard never raised his voice, but his feelings were always made clear through his facial expressions.

Those who love Richard will smile when they experience gentle reminders of him. For instance, when you eat spaghetti, fried chicken, mac and cheese or collard greens, you’ll smile because those were some of his favorite foods. When you wear the color blue, you may shed a bittersweet tear because that was Richard’s favorite color. When you play video games, you’ll laugh because you’ll remember that Richard almost missed a whole flight because he was trying to make sure that his PS5 got through security. When you drive by the park, you’ll smile because you know Richard was a great father who loved going to the park on Saturdays with the kids. When you braid hair or bake a cake, you’ll chuckle because two of Pooh Bear’s secret talents were braiding hair and baking cakes. The next time you see the movies Friday and Scarface, you may roll your eyes a little and laugh because those were Pooh Bear’s favorite movies…and you can hear him reciting every single line of each movie from beginning to end. The next time you see a great sale at a nice clothing store, you’ll remember how Richard loved to bargain shop but you would never know that because he always looked so fresh and so clean. If you happen to go shopping with a family member, be reminded of how Richard’s brother Savon loved to go shopping with him, and how Pooh Bear took such joy in dressing his little brother. When football season rolls around, you will remember how Richard dominated as both quarterback and running back. You will recall fondly that football was his most beloved sport, and his football name for the Bridgeport Raiders was "So Sick With It". People from near and far would come to watch #5 play whether they knew him personally or not. Touchdowns were the norm for him! Even when you shed tears for Richard, you will also smile and forever cheer for your Royal MVP (Most Valuable Player) – his majesty, King Richard.

King Richard Stanley Davis, Jr. was predeceased by his grandfather Stanley Smith of Stamford, CT, cousin Kah’lil Sloan-Diaz, uncle Victor Diaz, Godmother Kalonda Taft both all of Bridgeport, CT, and Godfather Marvin Foster, Jr. of Stamford, CT. Obituary Preview: In loving memory of Reverend Armatha Shular, a cherished mother, devoted wife, nurturing grandmother, and deeply spiritual presence in her community.

Reverend Armatha Shular, born in Whiteville, North Carolina to George W. Lennon and Agnes Odell Lennon on March 12, 1936, peacefully went on to be with her heavenly father on March 21, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and wisdom. While amongst us, she married the love of her life, Carl Shular on October 1, 1955, and moved to Norwalk, Connecticut. During her time in Norwalk, Reverend Shular worked many jobs, but none as great as being a mother to her two children, Robert and Carol.

Teaching the word of the Lord to her children was one thing, but teaching to the masses was what she was born to do. As an ordained reverend, Armatha Shular ministered to those in need. Reverend Shular was not only a spiritual leader but also a tireless advocate for the less fortunate. She founded the Calvary Baptist Church Community Clothes Corner, an initiative providing essential clothing to those in need. She also worked tirelessly with the youth, instilling values of faith, compassion, and service, leading the children's choir with grace and enthusiasm, nurturing young hearts and minds through the power of music and spirituality. Upon her return to North Carolina in 1992, Reverend Shular’s ministry was not in any way traditional. Though she was an Associate Pastor at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, she also worked to offer solace and guidance to the incarcerated through her compassionate presence and uplifting words of faith. Her ministry extended beyond the prison walls, touching the lives of countless individuals with her message of hope and redemption. As a part time teacher in the Columbus County School System, Reverend Shular shared her knowledge and wisdom with passion and dedication, shaping the minds and hearts of future generations. Her commitment to education was matched only by her commitment to community service, exemplified through her creation of the Good News Community Youth Outreach Ministry, which empowered young people to make a positive difference in their communities.

Reverend Shular's love for her family was immeasurable. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Carl Shular, with whom she shared 68 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and devotion. She is also survived by her children, Robert Gregory Shular (Kim) of Charlotte, North Carolina and Carol Armatha Brown (Tyrone) of Norwalk, Connecticut, who carry on her legacy of love and service. Additionally, Reverend Shular is survived by her sister, Mable McKoy, and a large extended family, including eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom were touched by her boundless love and wisdom.

Though Reverend Shular may no longer walk among us, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. The love for her family, her unwavering faith, and her dedication to serving others were the cornerstones of her life. Her light will forever shine brightly in our memories and will continue to inspire and uplift us all. Rest in peace, dear Reverend Shular, knowing that your life was a testament to the power of love and service.

Obituary Preview: Cecil P. Pringle, age 58, entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Bridgeport Hospital, Bridgeport, CT. He was born in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica on June 12, 1965, to the late Joseph Pringle and Evangeline Pringle. He attended Manning’s School in Savanna-La-Mar where he nurtured his love for football and later became a beloved member of the Reno Football Club, leading them to three championships. He was a Connecticut resident for over 25 years and was an employee at Bimbo Bakeries.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife Eula of 33 years, children Rushell (Alvin), Andre, Nishell, Cecil D., Brad, and Mishell; grandchildren Sahar, Sadio, and Saira; brothers, Claude Dryden and Errol Dryden; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Raymond Pringle, Desmond Pringle and his sister Yvonne Pringle.

Cecil will be dearly missed. A service in honor of Cecil will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 3:00pm-600pm at Baker-Isaac Funeral Services 985 Stratford Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. with a Repast to follow from 7pm to 11pm. Interment to be held Sunday April 28, 2024, in West Palm Memorial Gardens, 104 Dalling Street, Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica.

Obituary Preview: QUINNETTE DIXON was born in Bridgeport Connecticut on August 10,1962 and departed this life on Tuesday, March 05, 2024, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Geraldine Dixon Cauthen.

Quinnette was raised in Bridgeport’s Father Panic Village, after graduating Warren Harding High School in 1981, the family then moved to The Hollow, and eventually settled in Marina Village in 1984.

Quinnette was a 15+ year employee at Stop & Shop where she was loved by the customers and colleagues alike.

Quinnette had many hobbies growing up like crocheting, but her favorite was roller skating. She would bring home a trophy from The Mosque, The Roller Dome, or Stratford Roller Park, on a regular basis.

Quinnette was big on family, and took pride in being the best sister, aunt, cousin, niece, mother, grandmother possible. She is survived by 2 loving daughters Tyesha Dixon, and Starr Mosley. Grandchildren: Wayne Jones Jr. Troy Lopes Jr., Taniya Dixon, Nicole Vazquez, and Dior Davis. Great Grand Children: Jovon Jones, and Zyaid Lopes. A brother Edward Cauthen Jr., a sister Joan Watson, aunt Peggy Dixon, Uncle Clement Young, and stepfather Edward Cauthen Sr and a host of loving cousins.

Obituary Preview: Margo L. Holder passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Maefair Nursing Home where she was a resident for the past four years. She was the second oldest and only daughter of the late Frank & Geraldine Blasé Holder. Margo was born in St. Michael, Barbados on October 3, 1939. She attended local public schools in the area and worked for a few employers there and attended St. Mathias Anglican Church. When Margo was eager to make more of her life, she decided to come to the United States of America.

Margo settled in the states, in 1972 where she began her new life with her Mom Geraldine here in Bridgeport. She found work at Bridgeport Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide, worked for some years and then decided to get her degree in nursing and returned to school to earn her degree in nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She worked in this profession until her retirement from Bridgeport Hospital after 38 years of service in 2007. Margo was a former member of Calvary Episcopal Church, until she joined and remained a faithful member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she sang on the choir, was a member of the Well Wisher’s Group, and was the Parish Nurse until her health declined. Margo was a fast learner. She always prided herself in obtaining anything she wanted. Once she learned how to play Bid Whiz (cards), she went on to play pinnacle and of course Bingo. She was always willing to help somebody; it was in her DNA. Once you met Margo, you would never forget her. She was loving and caring to all she knew and always eager to help.

Margo is survived by her son, Michael Bonnet-Holder, England, two brothers, Victor (Joyce) Holder, Brooklyn, NY and Verlin Holder, Tampa, Fla. a niece, Dedrie Horner, Santa Monica, CA. Her Goddaughter, Jania Stewart James, Bridgeport, loyal and faithful friends for over fifty years, Stephanie K. James, Valda Piner, Barbados, Eudine Timberlake, along with Harriett Shorey and Lynda Lesuer, MN. Her church family, and a host of other nieces and nephews who were fortunate to be able to call her “Auntie”. A Life Well Lived will never be Forgotten!!

Obituary Preview: Marion McPherson was born on October 18, 1942, and transitioned on February 27, 2024. Marion was born in Olar, SC to the late Johnson and Josephine McPherson. Marion was one of seven children and was fondly called “Nillie” by family and friends. Marion attended Honey Ford Baptist Church in Denmark, SC along with his family, and was baptized at the age of 12. As he grew, Marion took interest in agriculture, and longed to learn to plow fields with a mule like his father and older brothers. He soon realized how hard the work was, but he spoke fondly of those times whenever he reflected on them. In addition to Agriculture, Marion watched his older brothers drive school buses during high school for the Olar/ Denmark school system, and he asked to do the same. When he was given the opportunity to drive for the school system and keep the bus at home, Marion was overjoyed! In his words, “I was a happy, happy child!”

Marion graduated from Vorhees High School in Denmark, SC, and moved to Norwalk, CT within weeks. Marion thrived in CT. He became employed with Corday Manufacturing Company in the early 1960’s and rose in positions over the next 40 years to become the Production Manager. Marion continued to manage all aspects of production for Corday until the company moved to the west coast in the early 2000’s. In his spare time, Marion became a weightlifting champion in CT. He also was an avid bowler, and pool player. Marion could often be found playing Coon Can, or Spades with family. He was a ‘people person,’ and could make friends anywhere. His stories about the past were plentiful and left you with a laugh and a lesson.

Marion is predeceased by his parents, three brothers Johnson Jr., George, and Samuel McPherson, and one son Marion Lee. He leaves to cherish his memory his long-time companion Minnieola Davis of Norwalk, CT; one daughter Marissa (Alvado) Morgan; a special son Miche'al D. Tomlin; one granddaughter Lauren Lee of Norwalk, CT; three sisters Betty (Ambrose) Taylor of Norwalk, CT; Ernestine Washington of Denmark, SC; Marcella Shoffner of Raleigh, NC; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 6:30 PM, Calvary Baptist Church, 21 Concord Street, Norwalk, CT. Family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 PM until time of service. Interment will be private.

Obituary Preview: Arthur L. Simmons age 95, entered into eternal rest on Friday, January 26, 2024. Arthur Levander Simmons (Art) was born on November 19, 1928, in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Arthur Ezekiel Simmons and Ella Johnson Simmons. He was an only child and spent his youth in Charlotte.

He attended West Charlotte High School where he lettered in basketball. After graduation Art relocated to Stamford, CT. Once in Stamford, Art worked hard and held many jobs including working for two German China and crystal importers. He landed a job as a Facilities Engineer at Clairol and retired in 1996 after 27 years.

Art married Adelaide Davis of Stamford, CT in 1949 and from that union the couple had four children: one daughter and three sons. His wife predeceased him in 1973. Art was an avid golfer who loved sports, especially his NY Jets and NY Mets. He enjoyed being outside working the garden and landscaping the yard. Art was a "MacGyver". There wasnt anything he couldnt fix. He loved to entertain, socialize with his friends and held many annual parties with his companion of many years, Madge Wofford. Madge predeceased him in 2006. Art cared tremendously for his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death in 2018 by Gloria Landy-Simmons, daughter-in-law.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Jo-Ann Simmons of Westport, CT; his three sons, Robert J. Simmons of Dayton, OH; Eric A. Simmons of Bridgeport, CT and Peter E. Simmons (Pamela) of Englewood OH; two grandchildren, Erica D. Simmons of Cincinnati, OH and Evan M. Simmons of Dallas, TX and a host of family and friends.
